There’s been a lot of smugness on Paul Dacre’s part about the conviction of Gary Dobson and David Norris. Hooray, the Mail was right when it, 15 years ago, splashed a headline accusing 5 men of being murderer. And boy they’re milking it…
The “MURDERERS” headline has become something of the exception that proves the rule for liberal commentators on the Mail – “ah sure, the Mail’s bad but they stuck up for Stephen Lawrence”. Now, with the conviction finally in place, there’s been an out-pouring of support for the paper. Labour MP Sadiq Khan described the paper as the “vanguard of the campaign”. Jonathan Freedland praised them in yesterday’s Guardian describing the original headline as the Mail’s “finest hour.”

This idea that the Mail is somehow heroic for splashing “MURDERERS” across its front page – a dangerous, libelous allegation – is so misplaced among the left-wing, liberal media (of which I consider myself part) that it frightens me.
Imagine, however unlikely you may think it, that Dobson and Norris had actually been innocent. Imagine that. Now look at that front page again. Why does the fact that they were found guilty after 18 years change the sheer vigilantist, sensationalist nature of the original article?
Lets look another way – what if the killers were black men and the victim was white? Would there be the same support thrown behind it? Is it just because the mail is playing against type?
Because it isn’t – its the same kind of fear-mongering, sensationalist, libelous, ill-informed, hateful garbage the Mail has always put out, except for once its against people whom we lefties don’t like either – which makes it OK?
It doesn’t. The original headline subverted the course of justice and forever removed any chance of Gary Dobson or Dave Norris getting a fair trial. I’m not saying they didn’t do it – but then, I don’t actually know do I? And neither did the Mail. The exposure of institutional racism within the police force is another matter which complicates the issue – its the only way you can justifiably argue that the Mail had any right to step beyond the laws of the courts, when the powers of the law weren’t doing their job properly. The highlighting of should be – and often has been – the main driving point of the story and the campaign by the parents of Stephen Lawrence has been a very important, powerful and influential one. And it is very damning of the 5 men that none of them did try to sue the Mail. But the nature of the article was the same as any other Mail headline – hate, hate, hate. Except it was worse because it may actually have interfered with future legal proceedings. I don’t find it out of character in the slightest. It’s mob justice.
I’d also like to bring the Metropolitan Police into this argument briefly as well, because people have been waxing lyrically about them too – Ian Blair, Jacqui Smith and Iain Dale on LBC last night were assuring us they were the best police force in the world, for one thing. Others have suggested that this is a reputation-restorer for the Met.
Well, more like a reputation-coverer. The case has taken 18 years to be solved…that’s nothing to be proud of. If anything, this is just going to try draw a line under the institutional racism of the police which, despite claims by the Metropolitan Police Authority, does still exist with arrest rates for blacks proportionally far in excess of arrest rates for whites. And, let’s not forget the institutional corruption exposed by the phone-hacking scandal, or the mishandling of the London riots, or the arrest of Simon Harwood for the death of Ian Tomlinson, or even the violent handling of protestors.
So neither the Met Police or the Daily Mail should be feeling too proud of themselves. You know what I say?
